Fascinated by Spani’s unique, multi-cultural substrate, which enrched the entire Renaissance music of the country, the ensemble ACCENTUS AUSTRIA made early Spanish music its main concern from ist very foundation in 1992. In the meantime, many years of occupation with this music have led to the development of a repertoire that hence extends from orally transmitted Sefardic Romances, improvisatory in character, by the way of the sumtuous and manifold polyphonic music –both sacred and secular- of the 16th century.
A second focal point of repertoire of ACCENTUS AUSTRIA is 16th and 17th –century music of the Austrian Empire. No less multi-cultural, this period saw the unification of artistic currents from Germany, the Low Countries, Spain, Italy, Hungary, and even from the Ottoman Empire –an exceedingly fruitful mixture which retained its driving force even until after the Classical period.
ACCENTUS AUSTRIA appears as an ensemble of variable composition, the number of musicians ranges from three to seventeen according to the specific programme. In recent years Accentus Austria has performed, among others, the following events: Semana de Música Antigua de Sevilla, Los Conciertos d’Estiu de Montserrat, el Festival de Santander, Palau de la Música de Barcelona, Festival de Música Antigua de Cracovia, Wratislavia Cantans en Polonia, Festival Yehiam en Israel, Faro Festival y el Festival de Música de Madeira en Portugal, Festival Flanderen de Brujas, Southbanks de Londres, Kyburgiade en Suiza, Tage Cambian Musik Würzburg en Alemania, and in places so emblematic as Schlosskonzerte-Innsbruck de Austria, Brucknerhaus de Linz, Konzerthaus de Viena, o Athens Concert Hall en Grecia.
In 2006 ACCENTUS AUSTRIA performed in the scenical stage production “Tha Lament of Arianna” in the Teatro Apollon/ Patras, European Cultural Capital 2006.
